When should I be tested for STDs?

The thought of possibly having a sexually transmitted disease or infection (STD/STI) can be extremely stressful.  The types of STDs are varied with many different manifestations with some having long term effects.  Some STDs can cause infertility, ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).  Since it often easy to confuse the symptoms of STDs with those of other vaginal infections, it is important that you consult your gynecologist whenever you are unsure about your reproductive health.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends testing for STDs:

  • When you have a history of multiple sexual partners or when your partner has a history of multiple sexual partners
  • If you have had sexual contact with a person who has a culture-proven STD
  • If you have a history of recurrent STDs, you may need regular STD testing according to your doctor's instructions
  • All sexually active women 25 years of age or younger should be routinely screened for chlamydia.  Women who are older than age 25 who are at risk for STDs (new sexual partner or multiple sexual partners) also need routine screening for chlamydia
  • All sexually active adolescents and women at risk for STDs need routine screening for gonorrhea

If you think you have any symptoms of an STD, consult your gynecologist for testing immediately.
